    27TH MARCH – TUESDAY

    We have a health check day today at school. We hold these whenever we have enough funding. I’ve bought the medication, hired a nurse, there will also be a UK nurse (Tracy) in attendance. Eeek!! The night before the Government suddenly announces that ALL schools will close today until April 16th. Do I cancel?? Everything’s arranged.   2. Worming tablets and westfield

    WORMING TABLETS AND WESTFIELD
    24th March

    Children here need worming regularly, and I think I need to buy more worming tablets, so while my friends sit on the beach, I have to catch bush taxis up to the Brikama – Banjul highway. The taxi to the traffic lights had a door that would not close, and no handle inside, so I had to try and hold the door shut by gripping the recess where the handle should have been.

  3. Tuesday 20th march

    The children have a long way to walk to the nearest primary school. At the moment they are in temporary accommodation, with volunteer teachers. There is community land available, and we have finally got a sponsor willing to build a school. So eager is everyone to start work that the land has already been cleared

  4. "Longing for that end of season Gambian Holiday"

    It seems a long time since we visited The Gambia having got back in December 2011, we would be normally booking for March and the last week of the season which would be the end of April just touching the month of May which generally sets us up until we return in November.

    We missed the smiling coast, the people and the sunshine and are now feeling a tad jaded with the stresses and strains or running a business and renovating property.

  5. March 12th monday. Commonwealth day

    Today is Commonwealth Day. All the children come in their various ethnic clothes and bring food traditional to their groups.

    We have Fula, Mandinka, Manjargo, Wollof , Jola and Caroninka at our school.
    I wore my hastily made Welsh costume. Everyone was amazed at the tall black hat (made out of cardboard and bin liners).
